What the stage codes mean

10 and 20: a project exists

A proposal is approved (10.99) and a project is registered in the committee work programme (20.00). No text is public.

30: committee drafts

The working group produces a committee draft, the committee comments (30.20 to 30.60), and the draft is either revised or approved for registration as a DIS (30.99). 26517 went through two committee drafts.

40: enquiry

The DIS is registered (40.00) and goes to a twelve week ballot of national bodies (40.20 to 40.60). The result is approval for an FDIS (40.99) or a referral back (40.92). This is where the draft is today.

50: approval

If the DIS is approved, the final text is registered (50.00). An eight week FDIS ballot (50.20 to 50.60) may follow if that route is taken; the 26517 record does not list those ballot dates yet. A positive ballot leads to publication.

60: publication

The standard is under publication (60.00) and then published (60.60). The ISO record usually shows the publication date at 60.60.

90 and 95: review and withdrawal

Every standard is reviewed periodically. A new edition replaces the old one, and the old edition is withdrawn. None of this applies to 26517 yet, because it is edition 1.

The planning window

If the DIS is approved at 40.99 without a second ballot, an FDIS could follow within a year and publication in 2027. If the DIS is referred back, or the FDIS ballot attracts comments, the window moves into 2028. The site uses 14 September 2027 as a planning date and states the earliest and latest case as 31 March 2027 and 31 March 2028, both labelled as cases, not announcements.

What to watch, in order

  1. 40.99: the DIS is approved for registration as an FDIS. This is the first signal that the text is nearly final.
  2. 50.00: the final text is received or the FDIS is registered. The text you can buy is now the FDIS, not the DIS.
  3. 50.20 and 50.60, if the FDIS route is taken: the ballot opens and closes. The 26517 record does not list these yet, so no date is claimed.
  4. 60.60: published. Read the published edition and replace every draft assumption.
